WIDOMV 2010 – Part 2 – NY Comic Con with Johnny Rox

WIDOMV 2010 = What I Did On My Vacation 2010

Subtitled: Spandex babes and getting robbed by the Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno.

Like I said in Part 1 of this series of my blog entries, this was originally going to be one document, but it got really long, and nobody was going to read that much no matter how much they like the way I write LOL

This entry is not so much Ducky Boys gang related, but more about one of my hobbies.   If you don’t know already, I am a member of the 501st Legion and Rebel Legion groups which are Star Wars costuming groups.  Now before you write them off as a bunch of geeks and nerds, realize that these groups do a helluva lot of good.   During this particular series of blogs, you will see that I have gone to two charity events to entertain the crowds and help raise money for good causes like the Miracle Walk and Safe in Hunterdon woman’s shelter in NJ.  But you’ll see that in later version of this series of blogs.

Now that being said, this particular blog is purely about geek nirvana…  And getting robbed by Lou Ferrigno…

According to Wikipedia, New York Comic Con is “an annual New York City fan convention dedicated to comics, graphic novels, anime, manga, video games, toys, movies, and television”. It brings together thousands of people who dress up as their favorite characters and walk around the convention.  Its like the Chiller Theatre thing I’ve gone to and taken pictures – on steroids…

We were originally going to go as a volunteer member of the 501st Legion, but the staff at NY Comic Con kinda screwed the group over (long story), so many of us went as civilians.   If it weren’t for the aforementioned Geek Nirvana factor, we would have bailed completely.

Johnny Rox (drummer of the bands The RiffSurfers and Tasting Grace) and I headed out to the show – We figured the easiest way is to drive to Port Imperial in Weehwaken and take the ferry across to the Javitz Center.  Turned out this was an awesome idea – No traffic and we pulled into dock like three blocks away…

We got there around 3:30pm to avoid the morning crowds…   The crowds were still massive when we got there – in some aisles it would take us 5-10 minutes to go about 20 feet.   I’d hate to see what it was like earlier.  One of my 501st legion mates was livid about how bad the convention oversold the show this year.

(Side note:  I didn’t see any of my legion friends there that day – The 501st group was wayyyyy in the back and the crowds really limited exploration of the convention – We did meet a Rebel Legion member who we hadn’t known before —  A guy named Dean A. who looks and sounds a lot like Ewan McGregor’s young Obi-Wan Kenobi – see pix below.)

Well, other than the crowds, the big attraction of NY Comic Con (for me anyway) is audience participation – There are always plenty of superheros and other costumed characters walking about the con and I was ready with my camera.  Heres my photo collection from the day.

Here is a small sample of pics – Go to New York Comic Con NYCC – Oct 9th, 2010 to see the full collection.

As you can see, there was a lot of spandex at this convention…  And a lot of people (including us) were having a lot of fun…    There were some really creative people who spent a lot of time and money making their creations…   My favorite (besides the female Green Lantern and the Nicole Kidman lookalike) was the Space Marine (blue Transformer looking thing).  That thing was bad-ass…  I don’t know how big the dude was inside that costume, but one of his boots was as big as my chest…  Look at the picture below – It may not look huge because its next to another huge costumed orc, but look at the people nearby.. Those are 5-6 foot tall people!

In the tradition of finding one person at a convention who is a major dick, the award for Jerk of the  NY Comic  Con goes to Lou “The Incredible Hulk” Ferrigno.  Lou gets the award for robbing me and John of 20 bucks (or a comparable picture)…

Here’s the story…

If you look at the picture above of Lou Ferrigno (the one behind the table), you can see the sign with his rates – for photos were $25 bucks each  or 2 for $20.    John and I interpreted that as we could each get a picture with Lou for $20 bucks each…   So we each dug out $20  and gave Lou $40 bucks…   I took the picture of John with Lou without problem, and then he started walking away.  I started to get his attention (he’s partially deaf), and when he noticed – he innocently went “What? It was $40 dollars for ONE picture” to which I pointed at the sign where it said 2 for $40.   Then he pointed all the way at the bottom of the sign where it said Polaroid Photo for $40…   Then Lou’s toadie explained that a photo was defined as a signed 8×10 photo of Lou…  When I tried to explain that the sign was badly worded, the motherfather turned his back on us!    Which is why Lou is the “Jerk of the Convention”

Yes, The “polaroid” fine print at the bottom of the sign was there, but if we’re going to be splitting hares – we took a digital photo, not a polaroid – and celebrity guests at other conventions normally do polaroids so that they can print them up and sign them right there in front of you, so its a different animal and worth more…

I am sure this isn’t the first time, someone got confused about that wording – so I’m betting he does it on purpose now to cheat his fans (who will no longer be fans after that crap)…  If it wasn’t intentional, he would’ve made an exception and took the second picture…

A good note is that Lou’s booth had no fans  hanging around whenever we walked by it – which was often since we were looking for Seth Green who had bailed earlier in the day…  So I feel completely justified in Photoshopping the picture above where its me, Lou and John now…  I also gave him a Schwarzenegger shirt since he got punked by Ah-nold back in the movie Pumping Iron…

Lou robbed us, but it didn’t ruin our convention trip – it kinda gave us a cool story to tell too… LOL

Hope you enjoyed this installment of  “What i did on my vacation 2010”  – Next up – the Miracle Walk Charity event in Verona NJ with the Northern New Jersey 501st folks…

Stay tuned!
